Frequently Asked Questions

When are applications accepted?

Applications are accepted from January 1st until April 30rd each year.

What are the dates of the residency?

The residence period is 50 weeks, starting on October 15th in the current year and ending on October 1st in the following year.

Do I need a car?

While we do not require residents to bring a vehicle, due to our remote location, a car will certainly be helpful and is strongly recommended. The hamlet of Orient has a small country store which is walkable but has seasonal hours. A public bus can take you to Greenport (grocery, drug store, medical, entertainment) and other points west on the north fork.

How secluded is Orient?

Orient is 15 minutes from Greenport and 3 hours to NYC via car, bus, and train.

Are visitors allowed?

Yes, for a responsible visit. Long term tenants must be approved by the trustees.

What is required of me as a resident?

It is required that the resident be a responsible steward of the historic Davis home and studio, to keep the dwellings clean, and to notify the trustees of any issues so they can be addressed before a larger problem occurs. While rent is free, artists are responsible for utilities, cable, and wifi. Renters insurance is required

Must I exhibit my work or hold an open studio during my residency?

No. Exhibitions, performances, readings, and open studios are at the discretion of the resident.

What is provided in the house?

The 2 bedroom/1 bath home is furnished including kitchen appliances, cooking utensils, dishware, sheets, towels, and washer/dryer. Lawn services and garbage/recycling pick-up are provided.

Can my partner live with me?

Yes.

Are personal furnishings allowed?

Yes, upon Trustee approval. All personal items MUST be removed at the end of the residency.

Are pets allowed?
